You worked hard to get a shopper to the cart — do not lose them at the final step. Here are the checkout improvements I implement on WooCommerce stores.
1. Reduce checkout fields
Remove company name, second address line and other optional fields unless you really need them. Every extra field increases friction, especially on mobile.
2. Allow guest checkout
Forcing account creation is one of the top reasons for abandonment. Offer guest checkout and invite customers to create an account after purchase.
3. Add express payments
Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal express buttons let customers pay in one tap. With Stripe or WooPayments these are straightforward to enable.
4. Be transparent about costs
Unexpected shipping costs are the biggest checkout killer. Show shipping estimates on the cart page, or offer a free-shipping threshold with a progress message.
5. Show trust signals
Place security badges, accepted payment logos, return policy and support contact near the payment button.
6–10. Quick wins
- Enable address autocomplete to speed up form filling.
- Use inline field validation with clear error messages.
- Keep the checkout distraction-free — hide the main navigation.
- Set up abandoned cart emails to recover lost sales.
- Make sure checkout loads fast — exclude it from aggressive caching but optimize scripts.
Test your own checkout on a phone every month. If anything feels slow or confusing to you, it is costing you sales.
Key takeaways
- Remove every checkout field you do not truly need.
- Show total costs, including shipping, as early as possible.
- Offer guest checkout and express payment options.
- Display trust signals near the payment button.
